After two years of silence, how did Merrick end up at the hospital?
a business card by Dr. Treves led the police to the hospital he was working in.

You certainly can write it this way if you were to rewrite the story, but since its an exam, we only follow one version, and that version does not have the above scenario.

The hospital chairman, Mr Carr Gomm wrote a letter to The Times seeking donations to allow Merrick to stay in the hospital forever.
